HTTP 503 Service Unavailable signals temporary downtime — overload, maintenance, or upstream failure. Used correctly it protects SEO; used incorrectly it tanks rankings within days.
HTTP 503 Service Unavailable is a server-error code (5xx range) that says: I am temporarily unable to handle your request, please try again later. It is the only HTTP status code with a defined SEO-friendly use case — Google explicitly recommends serving 503 with a Retry-After header during planned maintenance, deployment windows, or temporary overload. Used correctly, 503 tells Googlebot 'come back in 30 minutes, do not deindex me, this is temporary.' Used incorrectly — for example, returning 503 for routes that are actually broken permanently, or returning 503 indefinitely without a Retry-After header — and Google will start dropping pages from the index within 1-3 days. The semantic precision matters: 500 means the server crashed (deindex risk), 502 means an upstream proxy failed (deindex risk), 504 means an upstream timeout (deindex risk), 503 means I am intentionally rejecting traffic right now (preserved in index if temporary).
Top causes from our monitoring: (1) Maintenance windows — the intended use case. The site is being deployed or migrated, and the operations team intentionally returns 503 with a Retry-After to all traffic. (2) Origin overload — auto-scaling has not kicked in yet, the existing servers are saturated, and the load balancer rejects excess traffic with 503. AWS ALB, GCP load balancer, and Cloudflare all do this. (3) Database connection pool exhaustion — the application servers are healthy but cannot get a database connection, so they return 503 to fail fast. (4) Rate limiting on shared hosting — when you exceed your hosting plan's CPU or RAM quota, the host (especially WordPress hosts like SiteGround, Bluehost, WP Engine) starts returning 503. (5) Cloudflare 'I'm Under Attack' mode — when a site enables this, certain bot patterns get 503 responses. (6) Application crash loops — the app starts, takes one request, crashes, restarts, and returns 503 during the restart window. Common with poorly-configured Node.js apps that crash on unhandled promise rejections.
Step 1: Determine whether the 503 is intentional (planned maintenance) or unintentional (overload/crash). Intentional: ensure you are sending a Retry-After header (described below). Unintentional: the 503 is a symptom, not the disease — find the root cause. Step 2: For intentional maintenance, ALWAYS include Retry-After: 3600 (or whatever the expected duration is in seconds) in the response. Without it, Google may treat the 503 as permanent. Step 3: For overload, look at the time pattern. Is the 503 rate spiking at consistent times (8am, lunch, evening)? You have a capacity-planning problem; auto-scale earlier or upgrade your tier. Is it spiking randomly? You have a bot or attack problem; check Cloudflare/firewall logs. Step 4: For database pool exhaustion, increase pool size and/or add a read-replica. Most apps over-allocate write capacity and under-allocate connection pool. Step 5: For shared-hosting throttling, the only real fix is to upgrade hosting or cache aggressively at the edge so origin requests drop. Step 6: For application crash loops, fix the underlying crash. Add structured error logging, capture unhandled exceptions, and configure the process supervisor to NOT auto-restart crashed apps faster than once every 30 seconds (otherwise you mask the crash and serve 503 forever).

After applying, validate with `curl -I https://yourdomain.com/path` — you should see the corrected status header. If you are running behind Cloudflare or a similar CDN, remember to purge cache and check that the upstream-only response matches what edge users will see.

Reload with `sudo apachectl graceful`. On shared hosting where you cannot reload, the `.htaccess` change takes effect on the next request — but you should still flush any opcode cache (LiteSpeed, OPcache) to be sure.
503 is the only 5xx response Google handles gracefully — and it requires correct configuration. The contract is: serve 503 with a Retry-After header indicating when normal service will resume. Google will pause crawling for that duration and preserve your indexed pages. Without Retry-After, Google has to guess: it will retry a few times, and if 503 persists it will start treating affected URLs as broken and eventually drop them. We have seen Ottawa sites lose 60% of indexed pages in a week because a deployment script left a maintenance flag in place over a long weekend with no Retry-After. The other major SEO risk is using 503 for the wrong things — for example, blocking specific URL patterns (which should be 410 Gone or 404) or aggressive bot detection (which should not return 503 to legitimate Googlebot). Always whitelist Googlebot IPs from any 503-returning logic; the IP list is published at https://developers.google.com/search/apis/ipranges/googlebot.json and updated occasionally. Set up a monitoring rule that alerts if your 503 rate exceeds 1% of total responses for more than 15 minutes — at that level the SEO damage starts compounding daily.
We have responded to many 503 incidents across the portfolio. The most instructive one: an Ottawa professional services firm ran a Friday-evening WordPress upgrade and the upgrade hung. The site returned 503 from late Friday until Monday morning when staff returned to the office. No one had configured Retry-After. Googlebot crawled the site over the weekend, retried, got more 503s, and started flagging URLs as broken. By the time the upgrade was unstuck Monday morning, 740 of the firm's 1,200 indexed pages had been deindexed. Recovery took 6 weeks of resubmitting sitemaps, requesting indexation, and rebuilding internal links. Estimated lost revenue: $35,000 in client engagements that did not happen because the firm was invisible during the weekend. The fix that would have prevented all of this: a single Retry-After: 86400 header on the maintenance page. If the fix above does not resolve the 503 response, the issue is usually one layer deeper than the web server: an upstream application, a misconfigured load balancer, or an origin shield rule on the CDN. At that point a full HTTP trace (via `curl -v` or a Charles/Wireshark capture) is the fastest path to root cause.
