We surveyed 142 Ottawa-region small and mid-sized businesses across 14 industries between January and April 2026 to benchmark digital marketing spend, channel mix, AI Search readiness, and reported ROI. This is the most comprehensive Ottawa SMB digital marketing benchmark we're aware of for 2026.
Survey distributed January–March 2026 to verified Ottawa-region SMBs (≤500 employees, headquartered or with primary operations in the National Capital Region). Responses validated against publicly available signals (GBP, LinkedIn, domain age) and 19 partial submissions excluded. Data collection: SurveyMonkey + 24 follow-up phone interviews. Field period: January 14 – March 30, 2026. Analysis: April 1–22, 2026.
Median Ottawa SMB digital marketing spend in 2026 is $4,200/month — up 28% from 2024.
Only 11% of surveyed Ottawa SMBs have a dedicated AI Search Optimization (GEO) budget line — yet 64% report at least some traffic attributable to AI engines.
Local SEO + Google Business Profile is now the #1 channel by self-reported ROI for 47% of Ottawa SMBs.
Median time-to-first-meaningful-result for Ottawa SMB SEO programs is 87 days; for paid search, 11 days.
Ottawa SMBs that update their cornerstone content quarterly report 2.3× higher AI engine citation share than those that don't.
73% of surveyed Ottawa SMBs say they expect to increase 2026 marketing budget by year-end; the top driver cited is 'AI search visibility.'
The big shift from our 2024 baseline is the rise of Local SEO + GBP as the #1 self-reported ROI channel — overtaking Google Search Ads for the first time. Service businesses have woken up to the fact that the Map Pack drives more leads than the SERP for most local intent queries. Spend has migrated accordingly: median Local SEO investment is up 41% year-over-year, while Search Ads spend is roughly flat.
This is the most interesting finding in the dataset. 64% of respondents say they're seeing some traffic attributable to AI engines (ChatGPT search, Perplexity, AI Overviews). But only 11% have a dedicated AI Search budget line, and only 28% have ever explicitly optimized a page for AI citation. The gap between traffic-already-arriving and budget-allocated is the largest opportunity in Ottawa digital marketing in 2026.
Median Ottawa SMB SEO program produces its first meaningful result (a tracked lead from organic search) in 87 days. For paid search, the median is 11 days. For Local SEO Map Pack movement, the median is 38 days. These benchmarks are remarkably stable across industries, with two exceptions: legal (slower — 110 days median for SEO) and trades (faster — 52 days median for Local SEO).
We segmented respondents into top, middle, and bottom quartiles by self-reported revenue from organic + AI search. The top quartile has three things in common: (1) they update cornerstone content quarterly, (2) they have at least one senior strategist (in-house or agency) personally on every cornerstone page, and (3) they treat reviews as a continuous engineering exercise rather than a one-time push.
73% of respondents say they expect to increase total digital marketing budget by year-end. The top three reasons cited: AI search visibility (39%), local Map Pack defense against new competitors (28%), and rising paid CPC (19%). Of the businesses planning to increase budget, 67% say they'll allocate at least some new spend to AI Search Optimization.
