You edit meta descriptions in Shopify at the individual page level, not in one central location. For products, navigate to Products in your admin, click the product you want to edit, scroll to the bottom where you'll see "Search engine listing preview," click "Edit," and you'll find the meta description field there. The same pattern applies to collections (Online Store > Collections), blog posts (Online Store > Blog Posts), and standard pages (Online Store > Pages). For your homepage, go to Online Store > Preferences, and you'll see fields for homepage title and meta description near the top. This is the one exception where it's not buried in individual page settings. Shopify limits meta descriptions to 320 characters, though Google typically truncates around 155-160 characters on desktop and slightly more on mobile. We write to the 155-character target to avoid cutoff in search results. Don't waste space repeating your page title verbatim or stuffing keywords unnaturally. Write for the click, not the algorithm. If you're managing 50+ products or collections, editing one by one becomes tedious. Shopify's bulk editor (accessible from the product list view) doesn't include meta descriptions, so you'll need apps like SEO Manager or Bulk Product Edit if you want spreadsheet-style updates. One watch-out: if you leave the meta description blank, Shopify auto-generates one from the first ~150 characters of your page content or product description. This is almost never optimal because product descriptions don't read like compelling search snippets. Even a mediocre custom meta description beats an auto-generated one. Also, if you're on Shopify 2.0 themes, some page templates might have additional SEO fields in the theme editor, but the core meta description is still in the "Search engine listing preview" section of each page type.
