A meta description in Shopify is the brief text snippet that shows up in search results underneath your page title and URL. It lives in the page's HTML meta tag but you edit it directly in Shopify's admin without touching code. For product pages, collection pages, blog posts, and standard pages, scroll down to the Search engine listing preview section and click Edit. You'll see a field for meta description with a character counter. Google typically displays 150–160 characters on desktop and slightly less on mobile, so keep it tight. Shopify auto-generates a meta description if you leave it blank by pulling the first chunk of body text, but that rarely produces a compelling snippet. Write your own. A strong meta description doesn't directly influence rankings but it absolutely affects click-through rate, which indirectly signals relevance to Google. For ecommerce, include your primary keyword naturally, mention a key benefit or differentiator, and add a soft call to action when it fits. For example, a product meta might be: "Organic cotton hoodies designed in Ottawa. Free shipping over $75 CAD. Shop sustainable basics that last." That's 116 characters, keyword-rich, and gives a reason to click. Avoid keyword stuffing or repeating the exact page title. Each page should have a unique meta description. Shopify's default theme templates expose this field for products and collections, but if you're running a headless build or custom theme, verify the Liquid template actually outputs the metafield. At Ottawa SEO, we treat meta descriptions as microcopy, not an SEO checkbox. We A/B test phrasing on high-traffic product and collection pages by watching Search Console impressions versus clicks. If CTR is below 2–3 percent for a top-10 ranking, we rewrite the meta. It's one of the fastest wins in Shopify SEO because you're not waiting for a crawl or link equity to shift, just user behavior.
