A Google Business Profile is the free listing eligible businesses can create and manage to control how they appear in Google Search and Maps. It displays your business name, address, phone number, hours, categories, photos, and customer reviews directly in local search results and the map pack. It's distinct from your website—a website you own and host, while the profile lives on Google's platform—and separate from a paid Google ad, which costs per click and disappears when the budget runs out. Google determines which verification methods are available for each business, and timing varies by profile. Once verified, you manage the listing through the Google Business Profile dashboard: update hours, upload photos (JPG or PNG, 720×720 recommended, 250×250 minimum, 10 KB–5 MB, in focus and well lit), respond to reviews, and publish posts. These posts and photos keep the profile current, but there is no direct evidence that posting frequency, photo frequency, or response speed mechanically improve rankings in local search results. The profile sits between purely organic website results and paid ads. When someone searches "Ottawa plumber" or "coffee near me," Google surfaces relevant Business Profiles in the local pack—three pinned listings above the organic results—and on the map. Clicking through often shows the profile panel with reviews, Q&A, and attributes before the user ever visits your site. That makes the profile a critical first impression, but it doesn't replace a website for detailed service pages, blog content, or conversion funnels. If a profile is suspended, you can appeal through Google's tool and optionally attach registration, licence, tax, or utility documents—evidence must be submitted within 60 minutes of opening the form. Suspension processes and decision times vary, so accurate categories and consistent real-world business information help prevent avoidable discrepancies from the start. The profile won't do the selling your website does, but it provides Google with information that can make the business eligible and relevant for local search features.
