Our primary tools are Ahrefs, Screaming Frog, Google Search Console, and Semrush. Ahrefs handles most backlink analysis, content gap studies, and competitor research because its index updates faster than alternatives and the Site Explorer gives us reliable referring domain counts. Screaming Frog runs our technical audits—we crawl every site monthly to catch redirect chains, orphaned pages, duplicate title tags, and schema errors before they hurt rankings. Google Search Console is non-negotiable for actual performance data: impressions, clicks, average position, and Core Web Vitals straight from Google. Semrush fills the gaps Ahrefs misses, especially for PPC competitor intel and local keyword variations across Canadian cities. For a portfolio our size, we can't manually review every domain weekly, so we built Python scripts that pull GSC API data, flag ranking drops over 20%, and auto-generate CSV reports. We also use GPT-4 for bulk meta description rewrites and content briefs when we're scaling 50+ pages in a sprint. PageSpeed Insights and GTmetrix handle speed testing, though we cross-check with WebPageTest when CAD clients report slow mobile loads in rural areas. We avoid all-in-one platforms that try to do everything—they're expensive and mediocre at each function. A focused stack with API integrations beats a single dashboard that costs four figures monthly. We also don't pay for rank trackers anymore; GSC average position is accurate enough, and third-party trackers burn budget on vanity metrics. If a client insists on daily rank checks, we'll set up SerpWatcher or AccuRanker on their dime, but we optimize for traffic and conversions, not position 3 vs position 4. The tool matters less than knowing what question you're answering—most SEO waste comes from collecting data no one acts on.
