Google Search Console is 100% free and always has been. You just need a Google account and to verify ownership of your site through DNS, HTML file upload, Google Analytics, or Tag Manager. There's no premium tier, no usage limits, and no hidden costs. The tool gives you direct reporting from Google's index: impressions, clicks, average position for every query your site ranks for, coverage errors, Core Web Vitals data, mobile usability issues, structured data validation, and manual action notifications. You also get the URL Inspection tool to see exactly how Google renders a page, request indexing, and check for blocking issues. For a free product, the data quality is remarkable because it comes straight from the source. We verify every client site in Search Console on day one. It's the fastest way to spot indexing problems, track which pages Google actually crawls, and measure organic performance without relying solely on third-party tools like Ahrefs or SEMrush that estimate traffic. When a site drops rankings, Search Console often shows the coverage issue or manual penalty before any rank tracker catches it. The main limitation is the 16-month data retention window and the fact that Google sometimes samples data for very high-traffic sites, but for 95% of sites that's irrelevant. You also can't export keyword data in bulk without using the API, which requires a bit of technical setup. Still, the API is free too, just rate-limited. Some agencies charge clients to "set up and monitor" Search Console, which is fair if bundled with actual analysis and fixes, but the tool itself costs nothing. If someone implies you need to pay Google for Search Console access, they're either confused or misleading you. The only Google product with a paid search component is Google Ads. Search Console is a pure website diagnostic and reporting tool, and Google keeps it free because better sites make their search results better.
