Start by finding a keyword you can actually rank for. Use tools like Ahrefs or Semrush to identify terms with search volume between 100–2,000 monthly searches and a difficulty score under 40 if your domain is newer. Look at the top 10 results and ask yourself if you can write something genuinely more useful than what's already there. If the answer is no, pick a different keyword. Structure matters as much as the words themselves. Put your target keyword in the H1 title, naturally work it into the first paragraph within the first 100 words, and use it in one or two H2 subheadings where it fits organically. Break content into scannable sections with descriptive subheadings that match what people actually want to know. Keep paragraphs to 2–4 sentences. Google's algorithm has gotten good at detecting keyword stuffing, so write for humans first and let the keyword appear where it makes sense. The content itself needs to be the best answer on the internet for that specific query. If someone searches "how to winterize a cottage in Ontario," they don't want a 3,000-word history of cottages. They want a step-by-step checklist. Match the search intent whether that's informational, commercial, or transactional. Cover the topic comprehensively but don't pad it with fluff to hit an arbitrary word count. We've seen 600-word posts outrank 2,500-word posts when they answered the question more directly. Technical details that move the needle: include at least one relevant internal link to another page on your site, add 1–2 external links to authoritative sources when they support your point, and make sure your page loads in under 3 seconds on mobile. Use descriptive alt text on images with your keyword only if it genuinely describes the image. The biggest mistake is publishing and forgetting. Check Google Search Console after 4–6 weeks to see what queries you're ranking for on page 2 or 3, then update the content to better target those terms. A piece that doesn't rank in position 1–10 within 90 days usually needs a rewrite or better backlinks, not more patience.
