Google Search Console is 100% free. There's no premium tier, no usage limits, and no hidden costs. You simply verify ownership of your domain and get access to all features—search performance data, indexing status, Core Web Vitals reports, mobile usability checks, and more. Unlike many SEO tools that gate their best features behind paywalls, Search Console gives you direct data from Google itself without charging a cent. You can connect unlimited properties (websites), add multiple users, and export reports as often as you need. The only requirement is a Google account. The tradeoff is that Search Console focuses exclusively on Google Search data and technical health. It won't give you keyword research volumes, competitor analysis, backlink profiles, or rank tracking across multiple search engines. For those, you'd need paid tools like Ahrefs, SEMrush, or Moz. But for understanding how Google sees your site and what queries actually drive traffic from Google, Search Console is irreplaceable. At Ottawa SEO, we use Search Console as the foundation for every client engagement. It tells us which pages Google is indexing, which ones have errors, and which keywords are generating impressions versus clicks. We layer paid tools on top for broader competitive intelligence, but Search Console data is authoritative because it comes straight from the source. One limitation: Search Console only retains 16 months of search performance data in the interface. If you need historical trends beyond that, export your data regularly or connect it to Google Looker Studio (also free) for long-term storage and custom dashboards. Bottom line: if you're not using Search Console, you're flying blind on Google-specific issues. It's the one SEO tool every site owner should set up immediately, and the fact that it's free makes that decision even easier.
