Google Search Console (GSC) is the most important free SEO tool — and the most underutilized by Canadian SMBs we audit. Most teams check it occasionally for total impression numbers; few use it systematically as a diagnostic and decision-making tool. The high-leverage workflows below transform GSC from a vanity dashboard into actionable input. (1) Performance report — weekly review. The Performance report shows queries you're appearing for, pages users land on, click-through rate, and average position. Filter for: queries with 100+ monthly impressions and CTR below 2% (these are pages stuck on positions 11–20 with content too thin or off-target — high-leverage update opportunities); queries with high CTR but low impressions (your content is converting well but not visible enough — opportunities for content expansion to capture more impressions); pages with declining CTR over 30 days (typically signals SERP feature changes or competitor improvements requiring response). (2) Coverage / Pages report — weekly review. Shows which pages are indexed, which are excluded, and why. The patterns to investigate: pages excluded as 'Discovered – currently not indexed' (Google found them but isn't indexing — usually content quality or duplicate signals); pages excluded as 'Crawled – currently not indexed' (Google crawled but chose not to index — investigate content quality, canonical conflicts, near-duplicates); pages with redirect errors (broken redirects requiring fixes); and pages with server errors (5xx) requiring infrastructure attention. (3) Core Web Vitals report — monthly review. Shows pages by URL grouping that pass/need-improvement/fail Core Web Vitals thresholds. Prioritize fixes for URL groups containing your highest-traffic pages — these have the largest impact on user experience and the largest ranking exposure to Core Web Vitals as a ranking factor. (4) Mobile Usability report — monthly review. Flags pages with mobile rendering issues. Most issues are easily fixable: text too small, clickable elements too close together, viewport not configured correctly. With Google's mobile-first indexing, mobile usability issues directly suppress rankings. (5) Sitemap submission — set and monitor. Submit XML sitemaps for each major content type (pages, blog posts, products, categories). Monitor for sitemap errors and watch the 'pages discovered vs indexed' ratio — large gaps signal indexing problems requiring investigation. (6) URL Inspection tool — use for individual page diagnosis. When a specific important page isn't ranking or indexing properly, use URL Inspection to see Google's view of the page: when last crawled, what canonical was selected, what structured data was detected, and any indexing or rendering issues. (7) Manual Actions and Security Issues reports — check monthly. Manual actions are penalties from Google's quality team requiring specific remediation. Security issues (malware, phishing, hacked content) can cause immediate ranking drops or removal from results entirely. For Canadian bilingual sites: separate Search Console properties for each language version (en.yoursite.ca and fr.yoursite.ca, or yoursite.ca/en and yoursite.ca/fr) provide cleaner reporting per language. Use the 'International Targeting' section to confirm hreflang implementation is being detected correctly. For multi-location Canadian businesses: separate Google Business Profile reporting (in the GBP dashboard, not GSC) tracks local pack performance, while GSC tracks organic web rankings. Both reports are essential for local + organic strategy.
