Shopify gives you the tools to do SEO, but the platform doesn't optimize your store automatically. Out of the box, you get editable title tags, meta descriptions, H1 tags, customizable URL handles, automatic XML sitemaps, and a robots.txt file. The basic technical foundation is solid compared to older platforms, but that's where Shopify's contribution ends. What Shopify doesn't do: write optimized product descriptions, research keywords, build backlinks, optimize page speed beyond basic defaults, create content strategies, or handle duplicate content issues that arise from product variants and collections. The default themes often bloat page weight with unused JavaScript, and image optimization is manual unless you add apps. Shopify's blog platform is functional but basic—no automatic internal linking, no content suggestions, nothing intelligent. The App Store fills some gaps. You'll likely need apps for advanced schema markup, image compression, SEO audits, or review management. These cost $10–$50/month each, and poorly chosen apps can actually slow your site down. We've seen stores running eight SEO apps that contradict each other or duplicate the same functions. For Ottawa SEO clients on Shopify, we typically handle keyword research for product and collection pages, rewrite templated content that manufacturers provide, build editorial content in the blog to target informational queries, and acquire links through outreach and digital PR. We also audit theme code to remove render-blocking resources and lazy-load images properly—things Shopify won't fix automatically. Shopify's structure does make some things easier than WordPress or custom builds. Canonical tags are handled automatically for most duplicate content scenarios, HTTPS is built-in, and mobile rendering is generally clean if you pick a decent theme. But these advantages mean you start at baseline, not ahead. Competing stores have the same foundation, so winning in search comes down to content quality, link authority, and technical fine-tuning that requires hands-on SEO work. The platform enables SEO but executes none of it.
